I am excited to share that I received an honorable mention in the Children's Writers Group's Superheroes...With a Twist Competition.
For this competition, entries had to be <150 words and include the words parachute, elastic, and cake.
Here is my story:
ELASTIC GIRL
Colorful balloons brighten the dreary room. We sing "Happy Birthday" without a cake this year. As Mom opens her presents, her gown billows around her like a parachute. I tuck a stray wisp of hair under her scarf.
Dad whispers to me, "If anyone can beat this, she can," I hope he's right.
I imagine Mom as Elastic Girl, her body snapping back to its original form after being stretched so thin. She's already a superhero for enduring all she has. I only hope her powers can persevere.
